The Chinese Crested belongs the toy group and was recognized by the AKC in 1991. These are a fine-boned, elegant and graceful dog breed. The distinct varieties are born in the same litter. The Hairless with hair only on the head, tail and feet and the Powderpuff is completely covered with hair. This breed serves as a loving companion, playful and very entertaining.

It is believed that Chinese mariners sailed with this dog breed and that they evolved from African hairless dogs on board ships. During the time of the Chinese plagues, hairless dogs were stowed aboard ships to hunt vermin. By the mid-nineteenth century, Chinese Crested began appearing in European art and entries of the breed in American dog shows began in the late 19th century.
